Mermaid Princess Amelia Quintana as an Orphan brought up by Strangers (Character Analysis)

Written by Mermaid Priscila

Amelia Quintana is the titular protagonist of the Mermaid Princess Amelia fantasy series, as well as the elective princess of Antemidia, an undersea mermaid kingdom located in the Caribbean Sea.

Before being chosen for the post, she didn’t always have it easy. Amelia didn’t know her parents while growing up, and Alisha Quintana, a total stranger, took her in and raised her. Alisha and Amelia both tried to find Amelia’s birth parents, but all efforts were in vain. Her parents never showed up at the woman’s door.

When Tikalie, the previous princess of Antemidia, died, Amelia took part in the elections, and she won them. This caused her to move to the court and part ways with her aunt.

In court, her family became Araminta, Tony, and General Asvald. Despite being surrounded by people and busy with official affairs, Amelia still felt lonely sometimes. It wasn’t easy coming to term with the fact she might never experience the love of her biological family. Eventually, she decided to reject her parents in her mind, so as to avoid suffering.

When an earthquake struck her kingdom, Amelia agreed to work for Jet Mir so he could save Araminta. Amelia could not bear the thought of losing a friend that she loved dearly. She was very attached to Araminta, just like she was attached to Alisha.Amelia had trouble dealing with her family members when she finally met them. When she finally met her step-sister Lumina, she was creeped out by her, and had problems relating to her. Also, when she met her father at the Mausoleum, she didn’t know how to behave in front of him, and treated him just the way she treats Jet Mir – like an old pal.

Because Amelia has grown up as an orphan, and was basically brought up by strangers, and loved principally by her friends, she grew up to be a girl who’s somewhat emotionally crippled. She finds it hard to get close to people, and frowns when someone touches her in a friendly way. Having grown up as an orphan, she didn’t have anyone who could hug her, and in court, this was forbidden. Still, Araminta and Tony both crossed the rule, and hugged her. When they first met,  Edith hugged Amelia, too, as she didn’t know about her situation. Amelia frowned and felt uncomfortable, because she didn’t expect that.

Amelia struggles with romantic feelings, too. Maxine Foti disclosed that Alisha had a partner, but he was a human man living in Brazil. So, Amelia never saw her have a romantic relationship with anybody. Very often, she doesn’t know how to tell if a boy likes her romantically. We can see this play out in the case of Taisuke and Tony. These boys seem to like her very much, but she cannot tell, even when others point it out to her. She considers them friends. For her, friendships seem very important, as it’s there where she first found emotional warmth (after parting with her aunt).

Growing up without family is traumatic, and this is not something a young child should witness. Maxine, the author of “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony,” grew up without her father, and her mother often worked long hours. As a result, Maxine often stayed with her grandfather, or other family relatives. She felt alone, and the experiences she’s had fueled the inspiration, to write Amelia, just the way she is, to give hope to those growing up without parents or siblings. Despite many challenges, Amelia found friends and happiness, and this is an important message transmitted by the first novel in the series. So, no matter what you are going through, do not give up!
