5 terrible betrayals in “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” by Maxine Foti

The story of “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” is so complex that although it is not centered around romantic relationships, it’s possible to find in it some examples of really shocking betrayals. If you’re curious, who backstabbed whom, and what were the consequences, brace yourself, but be careful for there will be spoilers!

5 terrible betrayals in Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony

No. 5 – Irene turning away from Edith because of her relationship

Davika didn’t accept Edith’s relationship, but she made her point and at least remained loyal to her (which can be seen in the scene, where she follows Edith and Jet Mir to the mausolem, and then grieves her aunt). Meanwhile, when Edith decided to make up with Jet Mir, Irene scolded her and turned away from her. She judged Edith without even wanting to hear her point. Edith took it badly, felt disappointed, and was genuinely sorry, which meant Amelia had to comfort her later. Although this type of betrayal is not big, it is painful nevertheless. No. 4 – Captain Jet Mir breaking his promise of free help to Amelia

Everyone was appalled when Captain Jet Mir first promised to Amelia that he would help, and then showed his true face, forcing Amelia to sign the contract presented by him. For this reason, Amelia strongly disliked Jet Mir, and it took her a long time to forgive him; in fact, it was only after Jet Mir made peace with Edith, that Amelia, who trusted Edith more than anyone, chose to view him as a friend again.

No. 3 – Samantha having hidden her true identity from Amelia, for years

If you hang on to a friend who doesn’t understand you and are deceived by a little-known person, those are unpleasant and difficult experiences, but it’s much worse to discover that you have been deliberately deceived for years by a friend who could help with an important thing, but they didn’t. This happened to Amelia when she found out that her best friend and lady in waiting, Araminta, was actually the lost princess of Atlantis, Samantha. As it was revealed that she knew Amelia had a sister, and didn’t say a word, Amelia got very upset.

No. 2 – Marzia bearing a child out of wedlock

Next in line is a case of marital infidelity. Queen Marzia of Nerland fell in love with her court photograph, Adavan, to whom she bore a child. It is not clear what her relationship with her husband was at that moment, but given that the man disappeared without a trace sometime later, it seems he was embroiled in something bigger (which probably influenced his relationship with Marzia, as well). You can learn more about this in the sequel, “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Destiny’s Theater.”

No. 1 – Rathana killing her own sister, Lehatari

The worst betrayal that can be, is the bloodshed between relatives. Rathana slaughtering her sister Lehatari, is one of the most tragic subplots in the novel, especially that, Lehatari really wanted to help Rathana, even though the woman had already turned into a monster. The life lesson shining through this terrible occurrence, is that at times, the corruption of a person is irreversible and cannot be repaired even by someone who has much love for them.

Final thoughts on the betrayals in Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony

These were the five betrayals described in “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony.” As you can see, some, though unpleasant, are survivable, while others are pretty much unforgivable. Because of this, it’s safe to say that “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” is a book which seems light at first reading, but after a closer analysis of the sideplots, it is a little dark.
