Mermaid Gin from the Isle of Wight: What is it? Where does the name come from? How to make a mermaid gin cocktail? And what’s the Mermaid’s Kiss?

During one of the meetings of the Mermaid Princess Amelia fandom, someone brought up the topic of the Mermaid Gin. If you are curious about this new and unique brand of gin, and would like to learn some interesting trivia about sea herbs and folklore, read this short article!

For starters: What is Gin?

Gin is a spirit that is distilled from grain, usually barley, and flavored with juniper berries. It was originally developed in the Netherlands in the 16th century. The drink became popular among sailors and pirates because it was easy to transport and didn’t spoil easily.

What is the Mermaid Gin?

Mermaid Gin is a gin produced by the The Isle of Wight Distillery. Advertised as a gin for wild spirits, it’s distilled from a scented blend of botanicals such as citrus, juniper and herbs. With a peppery spice and an enticing aroma, Mermaid Gin is the perfect drink for anybody who wants to sip something strong, sitting by the sea and feeling the wind’s breeze.

Where does the name Mermaid Gin come from?

Mermaid Gin contains severel intriguing ingredients, among them coriander, liquorice root, and elderflower; but the most interesting one is the rock samphire. This plant is called Mermaid’s Kiss, because, it was considered a symbol of hope for the families of shipwrecked sailors.

What’s there to know about the Mermaid’s Kiss?

This plant is a type of succulent, yet some call it the sea asparagus. It’s rich in Vitamin C, and as such, it was used by sailors, to avoid getting scurvy. Before eating, it was rinsed thoroughly and cooked, then typically consumed with fish.. Some would also pickle it. Yet, the plant was also used in the production of glass and soap. William Shakespeare knew about this unique plant, and described it in King Lear.

Where does the Mermaid’s Kiss grow?

Mermaid’s Kiss grows on cliffs, rocks, and walls walls dividing the streets from the sea. In the past, it was harvested from where it grew, and sent to London in casks filled with sea water. Right now, wild collecting is not permitted, though – so don’t think of it, when visiting England, Wales or Scotland! Rather, ask around your local friends if they can point some shops where you can buy it.

How to Make a Mermaid Gin Cocktail at Home?

Because the Mermaid Gin comes in a shimmering light blue or link pink bottle with scaly pattern, it is, in itself, a perfect add-on to mermaid parties and weddings. A simple way to serve it, is to mix it with lime juice and grenadine syrup. Such cocktail can be served in a highball glass with ice cubes, or shot glasses. It’s a perfect for a hot summer, and the exact type of alcohol you’ll want to serve on your mermaid party inspired by Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony.
