Although it may seem that making candles is a complicated task, the truth is that there is nothing simpler. You won’t need too much time or ingredients to make candles as useful and versatile as these, perfect for those evenings when you feel tired and want to relax with the help of some mermaid magic.
The first step is to choose your favorite essential oil. There are many options, such as lavender, eucalyptus, rosemary, lemon… Maybe you will need some help to choose the right oil, maybe you already know well which one you want to pick. The best way to decide is to ask yourself, how you feel about each scent.
The shell can be as big or small as you want, but make sure it is deep enough to place the wick in it. We recommend buying ready wicks, as they’re inexpensive, and a home-made wick may not stand properly or get burnt completely without even reaching your candle!
Also, as a precaution, it would be good to sterilize the shell that you will use as a container. To do so, you will only need to carefully wash it with warm water and soap. You may also use an old brush to scrub dirt from the surface. Afterwards, boil your shell for ten minutes. If you are a child trying to do this project, you may want to ask for parental help with this step, to make everything safer.

Moving on to the mixture for candles. Such a mixture should have about 60g of organic soy wax, which is biodegradable. This type of wax leaves less soot and consumes more space than conventional candle wax, apart. To this, add about 20 g of shea butter, 19 g of almond or olive oil and 1 g of aromatic oil – or mixture of oils as the case may be, since you can mix several that you like the most. Remember that you can always use a measurer if you have trouble calculating proportions.
Then, heat together the shea butter and the soy wax until they have completely melted. Then, place the wick in the shell and, very carefully, pour the melted wax inside.

It may be a good idea to use pincers to keep the wick in place. Or, you can make a dot of melted wax and put the wick on it, then give it a moment to cool down. This way, the wick will be kept in place.
Once you filled the shell with wax, let it cool. Cut the excess thread of the wick and voila! You have a homemade mermaid candle ready to use.
Do not limit yourself to make candles in different types of shells (as long as they meet requirements to work as containers), or to decorate your candle with glitter.
