The Mermaid World described in “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” by Maxine Foti

One of the strongest points of the “Mermaid Princess Amelia” series is the highly detailed, diverse mermaids’ world. Let’s learn more about it, starting from history.

In the beginning, only two merfolk states existed: Mu and Sambath. Mu occupied a large part of the Pacific, North Atlantic, and the Arctic.

The location of the Sambath remains a mystery in the mermaid world. Some believe it is in the Southern Atlantic, others believe it is in the Indian Ocean. All that currently remains of Sambath are colonies, some located in the least accessible and most mysterious sea territories. Taisuke Hayama is one of the few people, who are known to be from Sambath.

Over time, new countries began to form, tearing holes in the two-colored, red and blue fabric of Mu and Sambath. One of these countries—old, but not the oldest—was Antemidia, and now there are almost 6,000 merfolk states (big and small) in the underwater world. Amelia claims that there are about five times more countries in the seas and oceans than there are on land.

As we learn later, many are very  civilizations; they have  separate histories, cultures and religions and are very colorful. Some examples are: Antemidia, Nerland, Sambath, Lotus State, Thai Pearl Empire, East China Sea, Yellow Sea, Black Sea, Gulf of Mexico, Kingdom of One Thousand Jewels, Kara Sea, Scottish Sea, Argolic Gulf, and others.

The kingdom of Antemidia  is divided into three rings; the outer, middle and inner ring. The outer ring’s borders is marked by sand dunes and sculpted monoliths covered by ancient glyphs. The middle ring is characterized by houses made of yellowish coral concrete, with roofs covered by sea grass and crowded streets. And the inner ring is full of glass houses, palaces, and temples. In Antemidia, polytheism is practiced, with the main god as Sal-An-Syon. There are three basic languages in the kingdom of Antemidia, Spanish being the main language, and Ancient Antemidian and Mayan as secondary languages.

The Lotus State includes the Nile River as well as underground caverns that stretch from Egypt to Uganda, through Sudan, Eritrea, and Ethiopia. It is also connected to the Red Sea and Lake Victoria. More than 80% of its area lays underground which gives it a unique aura of mystery. The Lotus State still celebrates holidays related to ancient Egyptian gods.

It’s important to note, though, that the underwater world is not primitive; it has always depended chiefly on a number of improved mechanisms.

One of such, is the smart bottle allowing mermaids to drink and store alcohol, juices, and other beverages under water. Bottles used underwater are different from the ones on the land, and so it is possible to drink from them because of a vacuum-based complex structure.

Another great inventions, are whale ports. These are large, empty areas where whales are stationed. The whales are each marked with the colors of the flags of countries that they are heading to, and have long cabins attached to their backs, with chairs inside them. It is the fastest form of transport under the sea—about twenty-seven knots.
