Nikodemus Mond, known as Opa to his granddaughters, is the current ruler of Nerland, a man whose authority rests on decades of political maneuvering and personal sacrifice. His title, the Third Count, reflects the line of succession that has governed Nerland for generations—a lineage of counts and countesses who have shaped the destiny of this rose-adorned county in the central Baltic Sea. His uniform, covered in medals and chains, his navy-blue coat, and his emerald-encrusted ring speak to his position, but they also hide the wounds of a man who has lost everything he loved.

Opa’s bitterness is rooted in profound tragedy. He lost his wife, his daughter, and his son-in-law, and the weight of these losses has hardened him into a rigid, uncompromising shell. His cold reception of Amelia—criticizing her hair, demanding she bring Lumina back, insisting on her Christian baptism—reflects the fear and loss that drive him. He cannot accept change because change has only ever brought him pain.

Yet Opa’s relationship with Lumina is more nuanced than his surface hostility suggests. He sent her to Tokyo to protect her from her father’s negative influence, a decision that required both foresight and love. He may not express his affection openly, but his actions reveal a man who, despite his bitterness, still seeks to protect his family. This protection, however, comes at a cost: Lumina’s exile from Nerland has created a rift between them, one that she must navigate carefully when she finally returns.

The disappearance of Opa’s emerald ring, secretly orchestrated by Lumina and Lady Melusine, reveals the limits of his power. He may have ruled for decades, but he is not invincible. His new ring, acquired from Rittertal, may or may not hold the same significance, but the symbolism is clear: even the most powerful figures can be outmaneuvered. This moment marks a shift in the balance of power within the family, one that allows the younger generation to assert their authority.
