21. HATIM-SHARMA Roshanara (Saliffa’s Sister)

Roshanara is Saliffa’s eldest sister, a woman whose life trajectory represents the traditional path that Saliffa so desperately wishes to avoid. She is one of the six daughters of Shah Parviz who successfully fulfilled her family duties through marriage, thereby clearing the way for Saliffa to initially dream of studying abroad, though that hope is ultimately dashed. Roshanara is married to Vedatman, the raja of the Atman Kingdom, a small mermaid nation positioned south of the Lihirient and north of the Honey Earth, and it was through this union that she discovered her enduring passion for the game of chess, a love that blossomed after she spent time with her husband. She later bestowed upon Saliffa a truly magnificent lacquered chess set as a gift, one with exquisite craftsmanship featuring pawns shaped like delicate shells and other intricately carved pieces that resemble mermaids, tritons, and dolphins. Though Roshanara never appears directly in the unfolding drama of Saliffa’s life, her presence lingers powerfully through this meaningful gift, which Saliffa repurposes not for leisurely play but as a tool for sharpening her logical reasoning and analyzing complex probability factors. Roshanara thus embodies the duality of familial expectation and quiet generosity, as her traditional marriage inadvertently provides Saliffa with an instrument for intellectual growth, symbolizing how even the most conventional paths can yield unexpected treasures that fuel a rebellious spirit’s greatest passions.
