Darren Klar is a young merperson who has dedicated himself to improving the lives of mermaid children living on land. He is the driving force behind an ambitious project to create an online encyclopedia specifically designed for merchildren—a digital resource that would help them understand both their underwater heritage and the human world they now inhabit. Amelia, Taisuke, and Jayden volunteer to assist him, dividing the research and writing tasks among themselves.

Darren appears in person at the 52Hz Whales Bar, where he meets Amelia and gives her a candid, sobering picture of the Underground’s financial plight. He explains that the institution cannot charge tuition because most of its members are poor merpeople who have migrated to land and cannot find suitable employment—their underwater qualifications do not transfer to human jobs, leaving them trapped in low‑skilled, often illegal work while they yearn for home. The rent is high, teacher wages are low, and they are forced to rely on the funding of Professor Ulysses Vitruvius, which prevents them from accepting Antemidia’s offer without risking the professor’s displeasure. Darren admits that he himself almost gave up and returned to the sea after struggling to connect with humans who could not understand mermaid life. Despite these hardships, he perseveres, and his project becomes one of the early building blocks of Amelia’s broader cultural program. He is a sympathetic, idealistic figure who represents the grassroots efforts that complement Amelia’s political missions.
