Crete was once home to the Minoans, an advanced civilization that thrived around 2000 BCE, leaving behind intricate palaces and mysterious symbols. To Jayden and his friends, who are mermen with ties to both land and sea, the Minoans hold no mystery—they can read their script, Linear A, and know that their disappearance from Crete was due to their return to the sea. The island represents home, tradition, and the comfort of family for Jayden.
Crete’s Underground
The Underground is a social space for merpeople living on land, though its exact location within Crete is not specified. It is temporarily closed for maintenance repairs during part of the story, forcing the Division to find their own volunteer missions. When it reopens, it becomes an invaluable resource, assigning the Division tasks such as caring for visiting mermaid princesses, organizing seashore concerts, and facilitating family reunions. The Underground facilitates the collection of signatures and group efforts.
Asterousia Mountains
The Asterousia Mountains are located on Crete and feature a flat hilltop where the friends gather to play their Minoan game. The location is scenic and remote, offering privacy for their activities. The hilltop contains a weathered stone altar where they place the game board. It is at twilight that the four friends gather there, their silhouettes looking like shadows against the fading light. The location provides a dramatic and magical setting for the ancient game to come to life with ghostly apparitions.
Aegean Sea
The Aegean Sea is crossed by ferry when Jayden and Theron travel from Crete to Athens. It is dotted with picturesque islands that Jayden and Theron marvel at during their journey. The sea represents the connection between the Greek islands and the mainland, a journey that Jayden undertakes to reunite with his girlfriend and prove himself to her family.
Athens
Athens is the historical capital of Greece, visited by Jayden and Theron on their journey. It is the location where Theron parts ways with Jayden to visit his cousin Vasilakis in the Argolic Gulf. Athens represents the urban center of Greece, connecting the various regions and providing access to the Corinth Canal and beyond.
Piraeus
Piraeus is the port in Athens where Jayden and Theron arrive from Crete. It serves as the gateway to Athens, the historical capital of Greece. The port is bustling and represents the beginning of Jayden’s journey into the mainland, where he must navigate unfamiliar places and prove himself.
Argolic Gulf
The Argolic Gulf is a location in Greece where the Division registers as a non-profit organization. Jayden chooses this location because the cost should be relatively low in the small polis there. Theron’s cousin Vasilakis lives in this area, and Poseyda serves as a teenage representative. This gulf becomes the administrative home of the Division, where paperwork is filed and official recognition is obtained.
Corinth Canal
The Corinth Canal is a marvel of engineering that connects the Aegean and Ionian Seas. Jayden marvels at its majesty during his bus journey along winding roads. The canal represents the impressive achievements of human (and mer) engineering, connecting different bodies of water and facilitating travel and trade.
Gulf of Corinth
The Gulf of Corinth is the location where Diamanda lives with her family. Jayden travels there by bus from Athens to meet her parents. The region is accessible via the Corinth Canal and represents the destination of Jayden’s journey to prove himself worthy of Diamanda’s love.
