Li Jiyuan, the engineering master of the bank vault, is the epitome of honest expertise and humble dedication. A man deeply passionate about his craft, he is the guardian of the vault’s secrets and its intricate, genius mechanics. He is characterized by his patience and his ability to demystify complex engineering concepts for a non-technical audience, such as when he patiently explains matrices to the Emperor by comparing them to a “game board.” He wears a trilby hat and is described as “ever patient and helpful,” taking immense pride in his two decades of maintaining and conserving the vault. His explanations are filled with a sense of awe for Shei Zhidao’s creation, which he describes with a mix of technical precision and almost philosophical appreciation, noting how the vault is like a mind that stores treasures deep within its memory. Unlike the conspirators, Li Jiyuan is transparent, openly admitting the limitations of his knowledge (“we cannot be entirely certain”) and showing no defensiveness. His honesty is further highlighted by the “blank gap” in his memory, suggesting he was manipulated by Mr. Yue/Wu Suowei without his conscious knowledge. He represents the ideal civil servant: knowledgeable, loyal, and finding his “greatest pride” in serving the emperor and his country with unwavering integrity.
