5 Inspiring Friendships in ‘Stories from the Undersea World of Mermaid Princess Amelia, Vol. 1’ by Maxine Foti

EDITH AND MARIAM

Edith Dvali and Mariam Marzani are childhood friends who grew up together in the royal palace in the Most Hospitable City, forming a powerful bond over the years. Despite Mariam moving out to study in a coastal city (Batumi, Georgia), she managed to keep in touch with Edith through occasional letter writing and yearly meetings.

These two friends have very distinct personalities. Mariam is known for being sociable, as she loves acting, traveling, and hitchhiking. Edith admired Mariam’s outgoing nature very much and wished she could be the same. However, due to the abuse suffered by her family’s hands, she struggled to be as outgoing. Nonetheless, Edith possessed her own talents, particularly in the field of art, and her kindness shone like gold, making her equally alluring as Mariam.

The beauty of these two mermaids’ friendship is that it endures year after year, even through distance and limited contact. When they do meet, it feels as if no time has passed. They can also share laughter and be completely honest with each other. Who wouldn’t want to have a friend like Edith or Mariam?

SALIFFA AND SORAYA

Soraya Shirazi-Mervarid, the daughter of Elmira Shirazi and the wife of Hassan Mervarid, is not only Saliffa Hatim’s cousin but also her best friend. Although the two of them are very different, they complement each other remarkably well. Saliffa brings energy, dedication, and passion to their dynamic, while Soraya’s quietness, thoughtfulness, and natural wisdom add depth to their partnership.

What makes these two’s friendship beautiful is their shared values, particularly their religion – both believe in the Heart of the World. Moreover, Soraya has the ability to influence Saliffa’s thinking when she’s going through difficult times, and she always lends a listening ear to Saliffa. In return, Saliffa remains loyal to Soraya throughout the years, choosing her over all her sisters (and she has many!).

EHSAN AND HASSAN

Destiny brought Ehsan Kaspian and Hassan Mervarid together due to their respective marriages. Ehsan relocated to Delshad in order to marry Saliffa and solidify the alliance between Delshad and the Caspian Sea. Hassan, on the other hand, has always lived in Jowhar (the capital of Delshad) and is married to Soraya, who happens to be Saliffa’s best friend. With the close friendship between the two mermaids, Hassan and Ehsan also developed a strong bond of friendship, although in a different time and place. They collaborated closely on various business projects with Saliffa’s father, the shah, and Hassan was always there to provide Ehsan with advice on business, marriage, and other aspects of life.

The friendship between Ehsan and Hassan is truly beautiful. It is built on the foundation of regular meetings, working together, sharing the family, and always being there to help each other. Their bond is so strong that they are like brothers to each other. They even look similar if you pay attention!

JET MIR AND SHA MIR

Sha Mir Madhu is Jet Mir Thakur’s cousin, and they share a relationship akin to a strong platonic friendship. Although Sha Mir’s mother, Shanaya Mia Madhu, constantly attempted to secure the throne for Sha Mir, Sha Mir himself believed it was only right to pass the throne to Jet Mir, who was ready to accept it.

When Jet Mir discovered that Sha Mir was having a secret affair with a court servant, he chose not to disclose this secret to anyone. Later, during the Massacre of Mrigatrishna City, when Sha Mir was stabbed by one of the assassins, Jet Mir blamed himself for not doing anything to prevent this tragic incident. His sense of guilt was so strong that it contributed to his post-traumatic stress disorder. Despite his exile, Jet Mir and Sha Mir continued to maintain their connection by exchanging letters.

The friendship between Sha Mir and Jet Mir holds significant importance. Despite the hostility between their mothers and the ongoing quest for the throne, they managed to rise above it all. Jet Mir’s protective nature towards Sha Mir and Sha Mir’s deep respect for Jet Mir played a vital role in strengthening their bond. Their friendship serves as a shining example of resilience and understanding, defying all odds that stood in their way.

SAWA AND ELIGIA

Eligia Mroz is a young mermaid from Lake Morskie Oko in Poland. She tends to be closed off, and for a long time, she didn’t have any friends until she met Sawa Zielinska.

Their paths serendipitously crossed when Sawa traveled to the lake to fulfill the tasks left by her aunt. Although at first, they didn’t speak; eventually, the bond between them grew stronger, and as a symbol of their friendship, Eligia gifted Sawa a geode in the beautiful shades of emerald and amethyst, which Sawa took with her to Portugal later.

Eligia, being a hermit, and Sawa, who was lost due to her travels, found solace in each other’s company. Sawa rediscovered her inner voice and sense of self through this friendship, while Eligia, in turn, became more open and receptive, thanks to Sawa’s companionship.

Interestingly, the unbroken geode that Sawa dropped holds a powerful symbolism, representing the unwavering strength of Eligia’s friendship, even in their physical absence from each other. Just like the geode, which remained intact despite the impact, Eligia’s friendship remained resilient and unbroken, transcending the limitations of distance and time.

POSEYDA AND MARA

Poseyda Eos and Mara Leventis have been close friends since middle school. They share a strong bond, and Poseyda looks up to Mara as a wise and trustworthy person. Whenever Poseyda needs advice on love, Mara is always there to lend a helping hand. And vice versa – of all their friends, Mara goes to Poseyda, not Elena, not Thalassa, to confide in her about their common friend’s sudden love confession.

What sets Poseyda and Mara’s friendship apart is the unique dynamic they share. Both being relatively more mature than their friends Elena and Thalassa, they have developed a deep bond based on mutual support and unwavering trust. Their friendship is a source of strength for both, as they understand and uplift each other during both joyful and challenging times.
