If you are looking for inspiration to choose the best merman name for your son or fictional character, inspired by Ancient Greece, then this article is just what you need.

I have compiled 20 mythology names for boys and their meanings. Read on to find out more about these names and their meanings!

  1. Eber – The name Eber, also written as Heber, is considered to be both of Greek and Hebrew origins, and mean “on the other side of a stream (or sea)”
  2. Erasmus – Erasmus is an old name, very popular, and mostly associated with the philosopher. However, it’s Greek, and actually, means “beloved!” It made its way to this list because, St. Erasmus is the patron saint of sailors.
  3. Galen – Galen is a cool-sounding male name, but in reality, it’s quite old, and means “calm seas” in Greek.
  4. Glaucus – Glaucus was the prophetic sea god that was said to have turned immortal from consuming a magical herb. He was rescuing sailors and fishermen as sea was his domain.
  5. Jason – Jason is yet another male name that sounds modern and  fresh, but is very old. Jason was the famous builder of the ship named Argo, and the captain of the Argonauts’ journey.
  6. Jayden – Jayden is not exactly a name belonging to the Greek mythology; however, it is the name of a Jayden Ptolemeus Katharos, triton from the Sea of Crete, and a great friend of the famous Mermaid Princess Amelia Quintana.
  7. Ladon – Ladon means “cleansing river” in Greek, but it is also the name of the dragon guarding the garden of the Hesperides. Perfect for a fierce boy or novel character!

  9. Nereus – Nereus is a name associated with water, and the man was one of the sea gods in Greek mythology.
  10. Nikolaos – Nikolaos actually means “a victorious person” but it is important to know that St. Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors, just like St. Erasmus.
  11. Oceanus – This name sounds pretty old, and isn’t really related to the Ocean. Oceanus was the father of mythical beings called oceanids and of river (!) gods.
  12. Palaimon – Palaimon is a name that means “wrestler,” but he was a  young sea god that helped distressed sailors.
  13. Pelagios – Pelagios is a name meaning “of the sea,” and, it’s related to female name Pelagia, who had the same function as Palaimon – helping distressed men in the sea.
  14. Phokas – This cute name means “seal” (in the terms of sea creature).
  15. Phorkys – Phorkys was the god of hidden dangers, and was seen as an old merman ruling the sea. The name itself, means “of the sea.”
  16. Phrixos – This name stems from the word phrix meaning “the ripple of water in wind,” signifying inner torment.
  17. Pontos – Pontos was the name of the god of the sea, who was the father of Nereus, Phorys, and others. His name meant “sea.”
  18. Poseidon – One of most well known Greek names, this one obviously denotes the Greek god of the sea, but his name truly means “lord/husband.”’
  19. Proteus – Proteus is a name that means “old man of the sea,” and he was said to be a representation of the Phoenician sea-god called Milk-qart.

Which name out of the ones described above is your top pick? For me, it’s Galen, maybe because, I associate him with Gale from the Hunger Games! Speaking of, if you were ever wondering whether there’s anything connecting Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Hunger Games, you may want to check out this article about the similarities between the two novels.
