How to knit a mermaid blanket with yarn? Step by step instructions, ideas and inspirations

Written by Mermaid Olivia

Making a mermaid blanket with yarn is an interesting experience if you like to knit. This tutorial is perfect for a blanket similar to a sleeping bag, whether you make it complete, or a simplified version.

The materials and process are similar to those of a conventional blanket. From 5 to 7 balls of 600 g of thick wool and a 10 mm crochet hook. Turquoise blue or green are most popular options, but you can choose any color. Better yet, why won’t you base it on the tail of your favorite mermaid from the “Mermaid Princess Amelia” fantasy series?

You start with a base of at least 15 loops, although it can be more if you wish, and go knitting from there, using a V stitch. This is a stitch that grows quite fast and also perfectly simulates the mermaid’s scales. Although it requires knowing a few basic knitting notions it is surprisingly easier than you would think.

After making the base of 15 loops you must pass a high stitch in each of these loops. This pattern is repeated upwards, like in a conventional blanket. For this part you can spend about 4 of the 6 balls. Here it is best to stop, make the mermaid tail and finish the blanket with the leftover, after all, it will be big enough to cover the legs.

To finish, make a chain of 15 loops, which will be the center of the tail, and that you will reduce to the sides as you reduce the number of the stitches. In this way you will make one of the fins. Repeat in reverse, attach the tail to the chain with a knitting needle and you’re done!

To make your blanket better we invite you to practice a little bit before. The first blanket may not look perfect but it is the practice that makes perfect! The wool balls and hook are not expensive and you will relax while you practice. It’s a perfect hobby for winter season, especially in the covid era that requires people to stay at home more than they’d like to.
