#5: MUROMI-SAN
“Muromi-san” is one of the funniest anime series about mermaids that one can find. It tells the story of Takuro Mukojima, an unmotivated high school student who likes fishing. One day, Takuro catches a hilarious, green-haired mermaid named Muromi-san, who immediately becomes his friend. From then on, Takuro, “Tak-kun” for Muromi, will become closer friends with Muromi’s friends: Hii-Chan, Sumida-san, Fuji-san, and Levia-San. The group will involve him in many of their adventures.
#4: TROPICAL-ROUGE PRETTY CURE
This new installment of the Pretty Cure franchise brings an unpredictable adventure full of sea magic to its long-time fans. After moving to the city of Aozora, lively and outgoing girl named Natsuumi meets Laura: a mermaid who fled the land of the “Grand Ocean” kingdom after the evil Witch of Delays cursed the “Grand Ocean” with a malevolent spell. The mission of Natsuumi and her friends Sango, Minori, and Asuka (the Pretty Cure) is to help Laura return to the Grand Ocean and get the throne.
#3: MERMAID MELODY PICHI PICHI PITCH & PURE
Love, friendship, fun, magic, beautiful music and MORE is what this fantastic anime can offer to you. It narrates the adventures of Luchia, the mermaid princess of the North Pacific Ocean who heads to the human world in search of the boy that she saved seven years ago and hasn’t been able to forget, Kaito. Luchia wants to reveal her identity to him, however she can’t do so without turning into bubbles. Yet the adventure doesn’t end there; faced with the terrible invasion of a group of evil demons in the sea world, Luchia must find the six remaining mermaid princesses and join them to save her world. Maxine Foti, author of the increasingly popular mermaid novel titled “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony,” stated that “Mermaid Melody” was one of her inspiration for Amelia’s incredible story.
#2: SETO NO HANAYOME
“Seto no Hanayome” or “My Bride is a Mermaid” is possibly the best romantic comedy that you can find about mermaids. It has twenty-six episodes, all of which will make you fall off your chair laughing. The story revolves around the main protagonist, Muchishio. His life changes dramatically when he is rescued from drowning by a mermaid named San Seto, who immediately falls in love with him. What Muchishio doesn’t know is that San’s family is basically the Yakuza of the mermaid world, and, now that he knows the secret, he can only save his life by marrying the young mermaid; which is not going to be easy, as her father would rather just kill him.
#1: PONYO
The whimsical fate of Ponyo brings together Brunhilde (one of the many daughters of the sea-dwelling magician/scientist and the sea queen), with Sosuke (a five-year-old human boy). The two become friends, and since then, Brunhilde decides to use the name Sosuke gave her: Ponyo. But Brunhilde’s father searches for her and unleashes a great storm that floods the entire village where Sosuke and his mother live. To live among humans, Ponyo will have to overcome great trials and adventures.
